MECH BUDDIES

Oh no! The peaceful valley of mechs is under attack! A blob-infested meteor has crashed nearby and the critters within have begun to spread. Journey to the meteor to restore peace to the valley. Be sure to recruit some helpers on the way there :)

How to play:

  • WASD to pan camera.
  • LMB to select/deselect units. Can drag selection area too.
  • RMB to command motion.
  • RMB + drag to command motion and aim.
  • Clear each area of all the blobs to continue.
  • Recruit new Mech Buddies between battles.

Known issues:

  1. No time for audio :(
  2. No time for more levels :(
  3. No time for currency + damage balance  :(
  4. When you beat the last level, you're taken to the recruiting screen before the main menu. This is deceptive because there is no next level! You can recruit some more mechs for fun, but will be redirected to the main menu for a new game afterward.

Really enjoyed this, great attention to art style and great animations on the mechs! I like the real time strategy of it, the friendly fire keeps you on your toes. Level design was quite good and makes you think about strategy. Really enjoy the random assignment of mechs and mech recruitment mechanics too, this made me want to keep playing. Only a couple of observations from me:

  • music and sfx would go a long way here.
  • The player pathfinding works on trees, water and bridges, but not houses.
  • I would have liked to get some additional scrap metal when I scrap a mech

Great stuff!

There are a couple of things here that stand out. Firstly, the game works well and is conceptually very cute. Works well as in not buggy, very smooth and complete. Second, the combat system is very annoying straight away. It could have potential in a resident evil sort of 'you cant move while youre shooting' kind of way, but it primarily just felt irksome to constantly micromanage combat zoning in an RTS style game. Maybe modern RTS design has us spoiled with its auto combat. Last, just as a tip, finding some fair use music and SFX and slapping them in there as a placeholder is quick and easy and does SO MUCH to bring a jam project together.

Keep making!
